Lightlark

Alex Aster

“There are lies and liars all around you…”

Every 100 years, the island of Lightlark appears, during this time the king of Lightlark hosts the Centennial. This is a game that only the six rulers are invited to the island to participate in. This centennial is different than all the lasts, if there is no winner, they all lose. The Centennial is a game that gives the six rulers the chance to break the curse that has plagued their realms for centuries, each realm has suffered with different effects of the curse. Each ruler lies, hides and cheats, but Isla may be hiding the biggest secret of them all. Isla has no power; she is at risk for death. The catch is the prophecy states that one ruler must die to break the curse, however if the ruler dies so does the land they rule and their people.

The twists and turns in this book had me turning the pages so fast it would make your head spin. The last 30 pages or so of this had me gasping, the twists and the ending * chefs kiss * was perfect, I didn’t see it coming.

This is one of my top reads of 2024. The magical system was written in an easy to understand but unique way. The romance is there but it’s not the main plot point. The character development is fantastic. This is appropriate for teen readers, with closed door/fade to black moments.

I can wait to see what happens in book two.
