Id like to start off with this review saying this is a book i almost always recommend to any kind of reader. This book checked all the boxes. I am OBSESSED. I realize its not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but neither am I. I have bought this book for a bunch of people already and will continue to do so.
This book does not get the love on social media and in the book community it deserves.
Princess Marra of the Harbor Kingdom is the third born princess. Her Eldest Sister The first born was married to a prince to help bring an alliance to the kingdoms, this was not done out of love and ended in her death.
After the death of her Eldest sister, The second born princess was married off to the same prince to keep the alliance between the kingdoms. When Marra sees her sister she feels as if something is wrong. She thinks her sister is being abused by the prince. Marra comes to find out that the prince is set on having a male heir, and if her sister cant produce one in time, Marra will be next.
Marra is now on a quest to save herself and her sister. Along the way the allies she connects with are by far some of my favorites ever made alive by ink to paper. The dust wife , has some of the best banter and one liners Ive read. The character herself is just amazing and lets not leave out her familiar the demon hen. We also meet up with a former knight who was obtained in the goblin market in exchange for Marra’s tooth ( yes, yes you read that right) and a fairy godmother who, has a very interesting ability unlike your normal fairy god mother. Lets not forget to mention bone dog, the best boy, he really is the best spooky boy out there.
The way she wrote this was fantastic , you start off very dark and gothic, even the words and pacing are placed to match who Marra is in that time, and as the story progresses and Marra develops the pacing, word choice and overall vibe of the writing changes as well.
I cant rave about this book enough the banter is top notch. Our broody knight is the perfect book boyfriend. Marra is a fantastic FMC with lots of growth. The dust wife and fairy godmother are perfect. They are all fingers on the same hand ( iykyk) .
“How did you get a demon in your chicken?”
“The usual way. Couldn’t put it in the rooster. That’s how you get basilisks.”
I try to keep all my reviews spoiler free so I don’t want to give away any more than I did. This is a must read. I10/10 will always recommend.
